Worldline processes e-Identification in The Netherlands

Bezons, December 15th 2015 – Worldline is now providing a major Dutch bank with a routing service to process BankID, the new service dedicated to e-Identification for the Dutch market.

Several e-merchants and other online players expressed the need for a way to identify persons or parties within the online context, known as electronic identity (e-ID). In 2014, the Dutch Payments Association and its members explored the option of using the banking infrastructure, which is already used for online banking transactions like iDEAL and BVN eMandates, for this e-ID verification service.

Worldline has been active in providing services for Dutch banks for more than 10 years, starting with iDEAL. In 2014, Worldline processed 180 million iDEAL transactions. In April 2015, the BVN eMandate service went live and the first figures are promising. Today, Worldline adds the processing of BankID e-ID checks to its offering. All these services are running on one unique platform, and are therefore creating synergies beneficial for banks, service providing parties like e-merchants and the end-user.

BankID supports services such age verification. For example, in order to complete a purchase on an online liquor store, customers have to prove they are over 18 years old to validate their purchase. BankID will redirect them to their online banking portal and after the familiar log-in; they will have to choose the bank-verified information about their age to prove they are not underage. Once the verification is done, the payment can be validated.

Worldline is really pleased to extend its services to the Dutch market. The first to provide BankID will be the Dutch tax authority and a Dutch insurance company. In the e-commerce context, e-ID solutions enhance customer experience by seamlessly integrating identification and payment and reducing identity-based fraud cases.” Explains Wolf Kunisch Managing Director Financial Processing & Software Licensing
